Marketing
The work of helping the right people understand that something exists and is worth their attention.
Example
A student starts a printing service for school projects. Marketing is not the Instagram ad she runs. It is the choice of who to serve (Year 9 to 12), what problem to solve (last-minute prints), and the message ('done in ten minutes for $3'). The ad is just one way she carries that message.
How it fits in
Marketing is not the same as advertising. Advertising is one tactic inside marketing. Real marketing starts much earlier. In choosing who the product is for, what problem it solves, and how to describe it. Strong marketing on a weak product wastes money. Mediocre marketing on a great product can still win, slowly, because the product itself does some of the work.
