The pause between wanting and buying

The item is already in the basket. A timer says the discount ends in 12 minutes. Delivery could be tomorrow. At that point, the purchase feels almost finished before anyone has really checked it.
A short pause can reopen it.
Three checks before checkout
Before buying, ask:
- What job will this do?
- What is the full cost?
- What will I not be able to buy or do if I choose it?
The questions are deliberately plain. They work for a snack, an in-game purchase, a subscription or a larger household item.
Say the full cost aloud
The total may include delivery, fees, accessories or a recurring payment. It can also include effort. A cheap item that is difficult to return carries a different kind of cost.
Ask the learner to say the total aloud. Turning several small amounts into one number can change how the choice feels.
Compare it with the nearest realistic alternative
The alternative is not always "buy nothing". It might be borrowing, repairing, choosing a slower delivery option or buying a different version.
Comparing with a realistic alternative produces a better decision than comparing with an imaginary perfect choice.
Match the pause to the size of the purchase
Not every decision needs a week of research. A practical rule might be ten minutes for a small optional purchase, one night for something that uses most of the week's available money and a longer conversation for recurring payments.
The pause should be long enough for the excitement to settle, but short enough that the habit survives real life.
Close the loop afterwards
After the purchase, ask whether the item did the job expected of it. This closes the loop. Over time, learners begin to recognise which purchases bring lasting use and which relied mostly on urgency.
The goal is not to remove pleasure or spontaneity. It is to create a small space where the buyer, rather than the countdown, makes the choice.
