Values vs Rewards
A value keeps pulling you when the room goes quiet. A reward is the good feeling you get while the room is loud.
Example
You volunteer at an animal shelter and post about it. You enjoy the posts, but you also keep going on weeks when no one comments. That second part is the value. If the going stopped when the posting stopped, the reward was doing the work.
How it fits in
Both values and rewards can feel motivating in the moment, which is why people confuse them. The test comes after the audience leaves. Values survive the quiet. Rewards do not. Knowing the difference helps you spend less time on activities that only feel meaningful when other people are watching.
