A small specific rule of the shape 'if X happens, then I will do Y'. Specific beats vague almost every time.
Example
'I want to read more' is vague. 'If I get into bed before 9:30, then I read for ten minutes before sleeping' is an if-then rule. The second one runs on autopilot once it is set. The first one needs willpower every night.
How it fits in
Vague intentions evaporate. Specific ones run almost on their own. The trick is naming the cue and the response in advance, so when the cue arrives the response is already decided. Research on implementation intentions shows people who write if-then rules follow through far more often than people who only state a goal.
