
Two students pedal into a half-mile course filled with slopes, loose ground and obstacles meant to imitate the surfaces of the Moon and Mars.
Their vehicle has no engine to rescue them. It was designed, fabricated and assembled by a school team, then checked through months of reviews before reaching the starting line.
In April, Parish Episcopal School of Dallas won the high-school human-powered division of NASA’s 2026 Human Exploration Rover Challenge. It was the school’s third consecutive first-place result.
Parish does not wheel out the same winning machine each year. The school says its students design and build a new rover from scratch, using its welding shed, woodshop and design facilities.
NASA’s challenge lasts nine months. Teams pass through design, operational, mission and excursion-readiness reviews before the final course at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama.
That process makes the paperwork part of the engineering. A fast rover that cannot be explained, inspected or operated safely is not ready to compete.
Parish’s 2026 results reflect that wider job. Alongside first place, the team received NASA’s Project Review, Safety, Phoenix and Task Tool awards.
A third straight win can make the result look easy. In fact, rebuilding creates a difficult handover. Experienced students leave. New members have to learn the tools. Useful knowledge must survive without turning last year’s design into a rule nobody questions.
The school’s longer record suggests that system has been developing for years. Parish won the high-school division in 2021 and 2022, placed second in 2023, then won again in 2024, 2025 and 2026.
The rover is not bound for the Moon. The result belongs to a student competition. But the reviews, fabrication, repairs and safety decisions resemble the discipline behind real hardware programmes.
Tradeoffs
- Rebuilding each year creates room to improve, but risks losing knowledge when experienced students leave.
- A light rover may move faster, while strength, repairability and rider safety cannot be traded away.
