How People Earn Money
This lesson helps students understand where earned money actually comes from. They practise spotting who is paying and why, compare how easily different work can be replaced, sort the four main ways money arrives, and build an Earning Path Map comparing three routes they could take.
What you will learn
- Explain why earning starts with somebody else choosing to pay, not with effort alone.
- Compare two pieces of work and explain how easily each could be replaced.
- Identify wage, freelance, business profit, and asset income, and tell them apart.
- Create an Earning Path Map comparing three ways you could earn on value, skill, risk, time, and upside.
What happens in this lesson
Chapter 1: Somebody Chooses To Pay
Understand that earning starts at the moment someone decides what you made or did is worth their money.
What you make: A shift in how the student rates three beliefs about where earned money comes from, measured across the same three statements at the start and end of the chapter.
Chapter 2: Easy To Replace, Hard To Replace
Compare pieces of work by how easily each could be replaced, and explain why that changes what the work pays.
What you make: A ranked list of four real jobs ordered by how hard each would be to replace, checked against the expert order with the student's reasoning shown back to them.
Chapter 3: Four Ways Money Arrives
Name the four main ways money arrives and tell them apart by what happens when you stop working.
What you make: A completed sort of four real examples into wage, freelance, business profit, and asset income, with the student able to say which kind keeps paying when the work stops.
Chapter 4: Your Earning Path Map
Compare three ways you could earn on value, skill, risk, time, and upside, and create your Earning Path Map.
What you make: A saved Earning Path Map comparing three earning routes on who pays, the skill needed, the risk, the time before the first payment, and how big each could get.
Chapter 5: When The Value Moves
Spot when what people will pay for has shifted, and decide what that means for an earning route you were counting on.
What you make: A saved note naming one earning route whose value has moved, where the value went instead, and what the student would do about it.
Key terms in this lesson
Asset Income
Money that arrives because of something you own, whether or not you worked that week.
Replaceability
How easily a piece of work could be handed to another person who would do it just as well, just as soon.
Upside
How big something could get if it goes well, rather than what it pays you right now.
