AI As A Thinking Partner
This lesson helps students use AI as a thinking partner without depending on it for answers. They practise brainstorming, questioning, and improving ideas.
What you will learn
- Understand the difference between treating AI as an oracle that gives you final answers and treating it as a thinking partner that helps you reach your own answers, and see why the second framing produces much more skill over time.
- Identify at least three kinds of tasks where AI is genuinely useful as a thinking partner, so students can reach for it for the right kinds of problems rather than using it for everything.
- Identify kinds of tasks where AI is not useful or is actively harmful, so students can avoid the common mistakes of over-trusting AI for things it cannot do.
- Combine the oracle-vs-partner framing, the AI strengths, and the AI weaknesses into a one page Thinking Partner Plan for a real task the student will work on this week.
What happens in this lesson
Chapter 1: Oracle Or Partner?
Understand the difference between treating AI as an oracle that gives you final answers and treating it as a thinking partner that helps you reach your own answers, and see why the second framing produces much more skill over time.
What you make: A saved framing note describing one recent time the student used AI and rewriting the interaction as if they had treated AI as a thinking partner instead of an oracle.
Chapter 2: What AI Is Good At
Identify at least three kinds of tasks where AI is genuinely useful as a thinking partner, so students can reach for it for the right kinds of problems rather than using it for everything.
What you make: A saved good-at note listing three specific tasks where AI is genuinely useful and explaining why each one fits AI's strengths.
Chapter 3: What AI Is Bad At
Identify kinds of tasks where AI is not useful or is actively harmful, so students can avoid the common mistakes of over-trusting AI for things it cannot do.
What you make: A saved bad-at note listing three specific kinds of tasks where AI should not be trusted or used, and explaining why each one fails.
Chapter 4: Thinking Partner Plan
Combine the oracle-vs-partner framing, the AI strengths, and the AI weaknesses into a one page Thinking Partner Plan for a real task the student will work on this week.
What you make: A saved Thinking Partner Plan for a real task covering the task, the AI strengths that fit, the parts the student will do themselves, and how they will stay in charge of the final judgment.
Chapter 5: Trust, Check, Or Reject?
Evaluate when an AI answer should be trusted, checked, or rejected by testing the claim against context, source quality, and task risk.
What you make: A saved AI Trust Check for one real or realistic task, showing what to trust, what to verify, and what to ignore or reject.
